The Royal Dramatic Theatre (Swedish: Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern or Dramaten) is Sweden’s national stage for ”spoken drama”, founded in 1788. Around one thousand shows are put on annually on the theatre’s eight running stages. The theatre has been at its present location in the Art Nouveau building at Nybroplan, Stockholm since 1908. The theatre was built by the architect Fredrik Lilljekvist. Famous artists like Carl Milles and Carl Larsson were involved in making the decorations, and some of the interior decorations were made by Prince Eugen.
This intimate, old-fashioned place, have a maze of staircases and back rooms that normally a theater audience wouldn´t be able to access. We decided to do our work using these spaces.
To invite the audience to experience memories from the past, memories from people who work in the theatre and let them through instructions play a part in these memories. The narrative is not clear but throughout the story you realize that everyone is hearing different tracks, and different instructions. As the play move on more people is filling up the building for another show that soon will start. And you realize that they are watching and you all along have been part of a play.
